Glenray’s GAP Year Program Strengthens Future Disability Workforce
Glenray has welcomed three new students into its innovative GAP Year Program, offering local young people the opportunity to earn while they learn and step directly into meaningful careers in disability support.
Now in its second year, the 12-month program combines paid employment with nationally recognised training delivered in partnership with Registered Training Organisation VERTO, enabling students to work toward a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) while gaining hands-on experience as Disability Support Workers across Glenray services.
Designed to address both youth employment pathways and the growing demand for skilled workers in the disability sector, the program equips students with essential skills including first aid, medication support, conflict resolution and person-centred practice — all while earning award-based wages throughout their gap year.
Glenray Learning & Development Manager Kate Gorrell said the success of the inaugural cohort exceeded expectations. “We couldn’t have imagined how successful the program would be. All four students completed their studies ahead of schedule and are now skilled Disability Support Workers. Combining real-life, on-the-job experience with structured learning has made a significant difference to their confidence and capability in the role. No matter where their future takes them, the communication skills and ability to engage with diverse people will stay with them for life.”
Following a two-week intensive orientation, the three new students have officially commenced their roles across Glenray’s services in Bathurst and the wider Central West. New student Levi said the opportunity to gain qualifications while contributing to the community was a major drawcard. “I’ve really enjoyed the practical side of the program; learning how these new skills apply in real-world situations and seeing the impact we can make.”
Launched in 2025, the GAP Year Program represents a long-term investment in building a sustainable local disability workforce. All four inaugural students successfully completed the program and achieved their Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability), with many continuing their careers in the sector.
By supporting young people to train, work and earn locally, Glenray is strengthening disability services across the region while creating genuine career pathways for the next generation.
